ACH Foam Technologies’ R-Control Structural Insulated Roof Panels were chosen to frame and insulate the Redford Conference Center in Sundance, Utah. In the spring of 2010, actor Robert Redford, owner of Sundance Resort, worked closely with Salerno Architects to select environmentally friendly and energy-efficient products for the new conference center. R-Control Structural Insulated Panels were selected for their inherent energy efficiency and structural performance.

The growth of the green, energy-efficient homes market has led to an increased demand for high performance building envelope products like structural insulated panels (SIPs).  However, working with structural insulated panels does pose challenges, especially for first-time users. To help shed some light on the common problem areas, we’ve invited SIPs manufacturer ACH Foam Technologies, Denver, to provide key tips and do’s and don’ts when working with the technology.

ACH Foam Technologies announced the expansion of its Structural Insulated Panel manufacturing operation into its McCarran, Nev. facility.  The move was made to better serve western U.S. customers, specifically those in Nevada and Northern California.

Often available in 1 x 1.2 x 2.4 to 5-m (3 x 4 x 8 to 16-ft) blocks, the material can be used to reduce loads on underlying soils, or to build highways quickly without staged construction.  It has been employed to repair slope failures, lower lateral loads behind retaining structures, reduce vertical pressure on below-grade structures, accelerate construction, and minimize differential settlement at bridge abutments.  Expanded polystyrene (EPS) Geofoam can quite literally be the essential building blocks for construction projects requiring embankment fill.

ACH Foam Technologies launched a new line of packaging made from 60-percent expanded polystyrene (EPS).  Dubbed WineLoc, the packaging is specifically designed for wine bottles and is projected to reduce the amount of packaging material introduced into the supply chain.

ACH Foam Technologies will expand production of structural insulated panels at its plant east of Sparks.  The move by the Denver-based company will result in four additional jobs at the facility, which previously employed 25.

WineLoc packaging uses EcoSix, a recycled molding bead manufactured by RAPAC, which offers superior protection, making it one of the most efficient packaging materials for the wine industry, according to ACH Foam (Denver, CO).

ACH Foam Technologies LLC recently uncorked what it claims is the first expanded polystyrene packaging to contain 60 percent recycled content.

The packaging is made with EcoSix, a recycled-content molding bead supplied by Rapac LP of Oakland, Tenn. Denver-based ACH uses EcoSix in its WineLoc shipping containers.

ACH Foam Technologies has become the first U.S.-based molder to offer expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging with at least 60% recycled content.  The Denver-based company has banded with Rapac and its recycled molding bead, called EcoSix, to produce WineLoc wine shipping containers using historically high levels
of recycled EPS.

When fire broke out in the studios of Grand Junction, Colo., station KREX-TV in January 2008, things were just about as bad as they could get.  Ron Tillery, studio manager, saw the opportunity to build a new studio that would be more energy-efficient and correct a long-standing problem with noise coming from a helicopter pad on the roof of the neighboring St. Mary’s Hospital.

Placement and settlement of traditional fill materials or consolidation of soils underlying embankments can significantly impact transportation project costs and schedules.  Consequently, in a National Deployment Statement, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) urged all states to consider using alternative fill materials such as expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam when planning fill and embankment projects.  By October 2011, all states will have evaluated EPS geofoam as a lightweight fill alternative.

The Utah Transit Authority’s West Valley Trax light-rail line in Salt Lake City is being called the nation’s second-largest geofoam project, behind only the massive Interstate-15 reconstruction from 1997–2001.

Challenge: Install a curved rotunda at Weld County Middle School in about as much time as it takes to finish a latte.

Criteria: The firm was looking for a solution that offered design flexibility and material cost savings.

Construction of the 1.1 million-square-foot Uline Distribution Center in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., was completed during the summer of 2009. M.M. Schranz Roofing and Sheet Metal Inc., Milwaukee, performed the roofing work, which included installing one 21/2-inch-thick layer of ACH Foam Technologies’ Type II Foam-Control® EPS insulation—a total of 2.75 million board feet—over the building’s structurally sloped steel roof deck in a Firestone Building Products ballasted EPDM assembly.

Spring 2009, moisture caused a retaining wall to collapse on Dubuque's bluffs. During repairs, the city discovered much of the bluff was unstable. That prompted a major construction effort.  A high density foam called Geofoam replaces the limestone rubble, making a stronger base for the wall.
